Grapefruits

We Are Your Favourite Store.

The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its relatively large, sour to semi-sweet, somewhat bitter fruit. The interior flesh is segmented and varies in color from pale yellow to dark pink/red. Grapefruit is a citrus hybrid that originated in Barbados in the 18th century.

Grapefruit is especially popular served for breakfast. Two varieties are available in South Africa, Namely Star Ruby ( Red or Pink Fleshed) and Marsh (White Fleshed). Both varieties have high Vitamin C content and the red varieties have a higher Vitamin A content.

What is grapefruit?

Named for the fact that the fruits grow in grape-like bunches, grapefruits are the largest citrus fruits, growing up to 18cm in diameter. Inside, the flesh is segmented, like an orange, though the flavour is more tart.

They come in both seeded and seedless varieties and, although the skins are always yellow, sometimes with a faint blush of pink, the flesh varies from yellow-ish white through to pink and ruby red.

Grapefruits are also a good source of fibre and vitamin C.
